Why Okinawa and Kumejima in October
We picked October on purpose: it's ahead of Okinawa's main kite season, which means fewer riders and more room on the water. Where we ride isn't fixed. Each day we look at the wind and decide where it's best, on the Okinawa coast, on Kumejima, or out by boat at the Hatenohama sandbar.
We expect 15 to 25 knots over blue water. And if the wind doesn't show, we don't sit around: it's not quite full winter yet, so we swap the session for a land excursion, a hike or a snorkelling trip.
What a day looks like
We start in Naha with a welcome dinner and three nights at Smile Hotel City Resort. By day we kite around Okinawa's coast, and a van takes us from spot to spot. On day four we fly to Kumejima and move into Eef Beach Hotel for the rest of the trip: boat trips out to Hatenohama, and kiting on Kumejima whenever the wind allows. The trip ends on the 23rd, and we book your flight back to Naha on the 24th so you can connect home.
Who this trip is for
You water-start and ride upwind on your own, and you bring your own kite, board and wetsuit. Twintip, strapless and foil riders are all welcome. A licensed safety boat and driver (Japan is strict about that) is on the water for every session, and if you're working on a new trick we're happy to do video coaching. This isn't a lessons trip.
Travelling with a partner who doesn't kite? They're welcome too. They can try flying a kite for free, bring their snorkelling gear and spend the beach days soaking up island life and the food.
