About Pierschool

Pierschool is a family-run water sports school founded in 2016 by two brothers who grew up sailing and surfing together. It teaches kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foil, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding from two locations on the Tarquinia coastline, Tarquinia Lido and Montalto Marina, with a dedicated kite-only zone at the Tarquinia Lido kitebeach. The school also runs multi-day windsurf, surf and SUP summer camps for children.

Four winds shape the spot: Scirocco (south-east, side-shore) keeps the sea flat until late afternoon; Tramontana (north, offshore) is gusty and flattens the water; Libeccio (south-west, onshore) can build swell up to 4-5 metres; and Ponente (west, side-onshore around 45 degrees), the dominant thermal wind, blows on about 90% of summer days and can reach 20+ knots once the thermal effect kicks in.

Waves
Wave size depends on wind direction, from flat water in Tramontana and Scirocco conditions to short wind swell in Ponente and Libeccio, occasionally building to 4-5 metre storms in Libeccio. Montalto Marina gets clean 2-3 bottom-turn waves during groundswells and is a winter destination for kiters and windsurfers chasing waves.

Pierschool — common questions

What is the minimum age to learn kitesurfing at Pierschool?

Kitesurf lessons are open to anyone from the age of 14.

Do I need previous experience to join a course?

No previous experience is needed; the base course starts with ground exercises and a first kite flight before progressing to bodydrag and riding the board.

Can children take lessons too?

Children can start surfing from as young as 3 to 4 years old and windsurfing from age 5, both taught in small groups, and can join the multi-day summer camp from age 7.

Is equipment provided if I don't have my own?

Windsurf, surf and inflatable SUP equipment can be rented directly from the school.
