What's the best spot for beginners and why?
“For beginner windsurfers and wingfoilers in the north of the island, Playa del Río is the best spot, and it's where Gecko runs its lessons. It's a lagoon with flat water, no waves and no currents, so students can focus on their progress instead of just surviving in open sea.”
Best months to learn, and which would you avoid?
“There's no worst or best month, conditions are good all year. In summer the wind is much more constant, while from November to March it is less present. The window with the highest chance of no wind at all is the second half of October and the first weeks of November.”
How does the wind behave, and what does that mean for a beginner?
“A beginner doesn't want a lot of wind on day one. Above about 20 knots it's harder to hold the boom, students fall more and the wind drags them further. Light wind makes starting much easier. When it's stronger, Gecko adapts by switching to smaller sails.”
The most common beginner mistake you see on the water?
“There are two: overthinking, and overconfidence about safety. It's also better to learn properly with a good instructor than to teach yourself and do it wrong, because it's far harder to remove a bad habit than to teach from zero.”
Where would you recommend staying?
“Corralejo is the most touristy and lively town, with the most options for eating out and nightlife. El Cotillo is quieter but still has a good atmosphere. Lajares is nice but in the middle of nowhere, so a car is essential. Gecko offers accommodation options in Corralejo or Lajares.”
A local tip that isn't in the guides?
“A red flag on the beach means stay out of the water, at most wet your feet. Follow the lifeguards' advice: people do drown on Fuerteventura by ignoring it.”
