Where to surf in Caleta de Famara

Caleta de Famara is a traditional fishing village in the north-west of Lanzarote, about 30 km from the airport, next to a beach of more than five kilometres inside the Chinijo archipelago nature reserve. The local school Calima describes it as one of the best beaches for teaching surf in the Canary Islands, especially for beginners and intermediates, and as the beach where all of the island's surf schools operate. Famara is the top choice when the swell comes from the north-west, and the shifting sandbanks mean the beach breaks in many different peaks, from gentle to powerful. Calima says it runs surf lessons every day of the year.

Calima's head instructor says learners usually stay in the first two kilometres next to the village, where most instructors and the lifeguards are. Strong currents can occur at Famara, especially at high tide. Named peaks along the beach include El Codito at the west end, El Molino, Los Bungalos, El Bunquer, El Palo and El Papelillo; there is also a separate zone used by kitesurfers.
