Best Places to Learn Kitesurfing (with Real Lesson Prices)
Eight beginner-friendly kite spots compared on flat water, wind season and what lessons actually cost, from €33 an hour in Langebaan to €58 in Dakhla.
The best places to learn kitesurfing have three things in common: shallow flat water you can stand in, steady wind that isn't too strong, and enough schools to keep prices honest. We compared eight spots on all three, using the published lesson prices of the kite schools listed on kitesurfing.me in October 2026.
What makes a spot good for beginners?
Standing-depth water matters most. If you can stand up after every fall, you reset in seconds instead of swimming after your board, and lessons cover more ground. Our analysis of 206 schools found the median beginner course is 9 hours. A good learning spot helps you actually use all nine.
- Shallow, flat water: lagoons beat open beaches. No waves, no currents, and you can stand.
- Side-shore wind: it blows along the beach, so you drift parallel to land instead of out to sea or onto the sand.
- Steady, moderate wind: thermal winds that build the same way every day are easier to learn in than gusty storm systems.
- A real choice of schools: more schools means more lesson times and more competitive prices.
Which spots are best for learning, and what do lessons cost?

How to read the prices: "beginner rate" is the median of each school's cheapest beginner price per hour. "Course" is the median fixed price for a beginner course of 6–15 hours. Both come from the schools' own published rates, not estimates.
Egypt: El Gouna, Dahab and Hurghada
Egypt's Red Sea coast is the easiest place to learn on this list. El Gouna is built around shallow lagoons, with a thermal wind that blows on an estimated 300+ days a year, strongest from May to September. Its 18 listed schools charge a median €55 an hour, and a full course costs around €440.
Dahab is cheaper, with a median €42 an hour and €290 for a course. Its town lagoon is enclosed and mostly standing depth, though the wind near the launch can be gusty. Hurghada, about 25 km south of El Gouna, matches Tarifa's €37 median rate if you want Red Sea conditions on a tighter budget.
Is Dakhla good for beginners?
Yes. Dakhla's main lagoon is one of the most recommended learning spots anywhere: huge, shallow and flat, without rocks or sudden drop-offs. Lessons are pricier than in Egypt, with a median beginner rate of €58 an hour across the schools that publish one. April–May and September–October balance strong wind with less heat.
Avoid the advanced spots around the lagoon, like Speed Spot, until you can ride upwind. Book a school on the main lagoon strip and it will pick the right part of the water for your level.
Brazil: Cumbuco in the second half of the year
Cumbuco has more kite schools than any other Brazilian spot we list: 20. The main beach is choppy ocean, so beginners usually learn on the nearby Cauípe and Tabuba lagoons. Peak wind runs August to December. The median beginner rate is €48 an hour, and a full course costs about €425.
Where can you learn kitesurfing in winter?
For December to February, look south. Langebaan, north of Cape Town, has a 20 km lagoon that's about waist deep and flat. November to February is peak season. It's also the cheapest spot on our list, with a median €33 an hour and €270 for a full course.
Cumbuco's season still runs into December and January. Egypt keeps blowing in winter, but more lightly: El Gouna drops to roughly 12–18 knots, and Dahab has wind on an estimated 50–70% of days. That's often enough for lessons, but plan a few extra days.
Cabarete and Tarifa: more schools, more nuance
Cabarete's reef keeps the inner bay flat, and mornings are calmer than afternoons. That's good for lessons. Most sources name June to August as the windiest months. Its 14 listed schools charge a median €55 an hour and €382 for a course.
Tarifa has 53 kite schools, the biggest choice in Europe, and a low median rate of €37 an hour. It's not a lagoon spot, though. The strong Levante wind is tough for first lessons, so learn at Los Lances on Poniente days or with a school that picks the beach for you.

How to choose
Pick by month first, then by water. Spring to autumn, Egypt and Dakhla are the safest bets. In northern winter, go to Langebaan or Cumbuco. Then compare schools at that spot by price and course length. You can browse all kite destinations, read how hard kitesurfing is to learn, or compare kite schools directly.
