Dahab is a small town on the Gulf of Aqaba in Egypt's South Sinai, built its kite reputation on a shallow, enclosed lagoon right at the edge of town, one of the more reliable dedicated beginner spots anywhere. The Gulf funnels a steady wind along the Sinai coast on an estimated 300 days a year, so unlike most kite destinations Dahab doesn't really have an off-season, just a calmer winter and a windier summer. Desert mountains rise straight across the water as a backdrop, and the same town is one of the Red Sea's best-known diving spots, so a no-wind day is rarely a wasted one.
Dahab sits on the Gulf of Aqaba, a natural wind funnel along the Sinai coast that keeps the spot windy an estimated 300 days a year. Because the lagoon is boxed in by a headland and the town itself, the wind is often gusty right at the launch, which is why local schools rig smaller kites (around 7-10m) even on days that read as only moderate. Winter brings a more cyclical pattern of several windy days followed by a few calm ones, rather than the steadier day-to-day wind of the main season. Dahab doesn't shut down for a season the way a single-wind spot does. Independent trackers put winter (December-February) at roughly 50-70% windy days, rising through spring to a widely-cited 90%+ reliability from May to September, then easing again into a calmer autumn. In practice the lagoon is kiteable most of the year; May-September is simply the safest bet for consistent, stronger wind.

3 beaches, each with its own character. Pick the one that fits your level — your school will choose the best one for the day's wind.
The shallow, enclosed town lagoon is built for exactly this — you can stand up in most of it, and Dahab's schools teach here every day.
Flat, safe water to rack up hours in, though the wind inside the lagoon can be gusty, so expect to work on kite control as much as riding.
Open water past the lagoon's headland, plus a wilder second spot (the Blue Lagoon) a jeep ride north for a change of scenery.
Small waves and chop exist past the reef, and the near-year-round wind means fewer wasted days than most trip spots — just not a big-air destination like Cape Town or a wave break like Tarifa's Atlantic side.

All 8 rental schools in Dahab →There's no single town-wide kiting ordinance the way Tarifa has one, but the shared lagoon runs on a few consistently reported rules: kiting stays inside the lagoon and the open water beyond it, not the separate bay some centers reserve for windsurfers, and a few centers block kiting in the windsurfing area during set midday hours. Riding outside the lagoon generally means being affiliated with a center's radio/rescue setup, given the more offshore-influenced wind out there.

Mashraba: The main waterfront promenade — restaurants, dive centers and most mid-range/upscale hotels, an easy walk to the lagoon. Assalah: Quieter and more budget-friendly, just south of Mashraba, popular with longer-stay visitors. Lighthouse: North of the centre, geared toward divers with direct shore access to Dahab's best-known reef, still an easy stretch from the lagoon.

First-hand advice from Julia and the Soul Kiters team, who teach here every day.
“The Dahab kite lagoon is a great place to learn. It's enclosed, sandy, and shallow enough to stand in, with no reef. There's one small section that runs about 5-6 meters deep, but beginner students usually don't ride out that far.”

“Dahab doesn't really have a wind season, it blows all year round. Summer tends to be the steadiest, since there's less difference between day and night temperatures. For comfort, meaning air and water temperature, autumn (October-November) and spring (March-May) are the best times.”
“Inside the lagoon the wind can be gusty in places, so as a beginner you need to pay extra attention to kite control.”
“Gripping the bar too hard. Beginners tend to hold on tight and use it for support, when the bar is really there for steering.”
“Any of the hotels right on the lagoon work well, or an apartment anywhere in Dahab through Airbnb. The town is small and easy to get around by bike, and taxis cost only about $2, so you don't need to rent a car.”

“The best wind is at sunset, at high tide. After your session, have dinner at one of the seafront restaurants in the Lighthouse area, my favorite is El Dorado.”
