Best Time to Kitesurf in Dahab: Wind and Water by Month
Dahab gets wind on an estimated 300 days a year. Which months are the safest bet, when the water is warmest and when to come for a first kite course.
The best time to kitesurf in Dahab is May to September, when independent trackers put the wind at a widely cited 90 % or more of days. But Dahab is not a one-season spot: the Gulf of Aqaba funnels wind along the Sinai coast on an estimated 300 days a year, and even in the calmer winter months roughly half to two thirds of days are windy. For a first course, spring and autumn are the most comfortable.
Dahab wind by month
| Months | Wind | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| December – February | Calmer: windy spells of a few days, then a few quiet ones (50–70 % windy days) | Riders with flexible plans; bring a 4/3 mm wetsuit |
| March – April | Shoulder months, more wind week by week | Beginners who want mild temperatures |
| May – September | Main season: wind on most days (90 %+) | Everyone, the safest bet for a short trip |
| October – November | Shoulder months, wind easing | Beginners who want warm water and mild air |
Why the wind in the lagoon feels gusty
The kite lagoon is boxed in by a headland and the town, which sit upwind. So even on days that read as moderate, the wind at the launch can be gusty, and local schools rig smaller kites, around 7 to 10 m. For a beginner this mostly means paying extra attention to kite control. Out past the headland the wind is cleaner but more offshore, which is why riding there generally means being part of a centre's radio and rescue setup.
Best months for a first kite course
Julia from Soul Kiters puts it simply: "Dahab doesn't really have a wind season, it blows all year round. Summer tends to be the steadiest, since there's less difference between day and night temperatures. For comfort, meaning air and water temperature, autumn (October-November) and spring (March-May) are the best times." In midsummer the wind is most reliable but the heat is high; in winter you will want a full wetsuit and some spare days in case of a calm spell.
Her tip for any time of year: the best wind is at sunset, at high tide.
What to wear in the water
- Summer (roughly June to September): water 23–28 °C, a rash guard or 1 mm top is often enough.
- Winter (December to February): water 19–23 °C, a 4/3 mm wetsuit is the usual choice.
