Surfing in Dakhla: Atlantic Spots, Lessons and Prices
Dakhla is known for its kite lagoon, but the waves are on the Atlantic side. Where a local school takes you surfing, which spot suits which level, and what lessons cost, from €30 for 2 hours in a group.
Most people come to Dakhla for the flat lagoon and the wind. Surfing happens elsewhere: on the Atlantic coast of the peninsula, where the swell comes in. Schools do not teach surf in the lagoon; they drive you by 4x4 to the spot that works on the day. Here is what that looks like and what it costs.
Where you surf
KiteResorts Dakhla picks the spot each day according to the conditions and runs half-day and full-day surf trips to three of them:
- Aarich: the school calls it one of the most interesting spots of the region.
- Westpoint (Oum Lbouer): a long right-hand point break over sand and reef, about five kilometres from town on a paved road. Published guides describe it as advanced to expert, with 1 to 3 m of swell in the October to March window.
- Pointe d'Or: known for regular waves in a spectacular Atlantic setting, according to the school.
If you are new to surfing, Westpoint is not where you start. Tell the school your level when you book; it chooses the spot for your session.
Lesson formats and prices
All surf lessons include the complete surf equipment and the 4x4 transfer to the spot. Private lessons are one instructor for one surfer. Semi-private lessons are one instructor for two, each with their own board. Group lessons are one instructor for up to four, with boards shared in pairs. The school's website does not say whether the semi-private and group prices are per person, so check this with the school when you send your request.
| Lesson time | Private | Semi-private (2 surfers) | Group (up to 4) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 hours | €90 | €60 | €30 |
| 4 hours | €160 | €130 | €60 |
| 6 hours | €230 | €200 | €90 |
| 8 hours | €300 | €280 | €120 |
| 10 hours | €360 | €330 | €150 |
| 12 hours | €410 | €380 | €180 |
You can book these on the Dakhla surfing page or on the KiteResorts Dakhla profile: choose your dates and send the request, the school confirms it, and you pay at the school.
Combine it with the lagoon
The same school teaches kitesurfing and wing foiling on the lagoon, so a surf session fits on a day when the wind is light or you want a break from the kite. See learning to kitesurf in Dakhla and wing foiling in Dakhla.
Can you surf in Dakhla?
Yes, on the Atlantic side of the peninsula, not in the lagoon. Schools take you by 4x4 to spots such as Aarich, Westpoint and Pointe d'Or, chosen by the day's conditions.
How much is a surf lesson in Dakhla?
At KiteResorts Dakhla, 2 hours cost €90 private, €60 semi-private or €30 in a group of up to four, with equipment and the 4x4 transfer included. Ask the school whether the shared formats are per person.
Is Westpoint good for beginners?
No. Published guides describe Westpoint (Oum Lbouer) as an advanced to expert point break. The school picks an easier spot for beginners.
When is the best time for surfing in Dakhla?
Published guides give October to March as the swell window for Westpoint. The school did not give us its own season, so ask it about the conditions for your dates.
