Learning to Kitesurf in Dakhla: Lessons, Prices and What to Expect
What learning to kite on Dakhla's lagoon in Morocco looks like: flat shallow water, strong wind, which lesson format to pick and what it costs, from €60 per person.
Dakhla is repeatedly named one of the best places in the world to take your first kite lessons. The lagoon on this peninsula in southern Morocco is over 40 km long, flat and shallow, and a thermal wind blows on 300+ days a year. Here is what a lesson looks like, which format to choose and what it costs.
Why the lagoon works for beginners
The main lagoon, around PK20 to PK25, is flat and shallow: waist-deep for 200 m or more in places, with a soft sand bottom and no rocks, currents or sudden depth changes. Instructors can stand next to a student for the very first kite flights. The wind builds through the morning and blows steadily from around midday into the evening, mostly side-shore across the lagoon. In peak summer (July and August) it can be strong and gusty for a first-ever session, so the shoulder months are often the gentler choice for beginners.
Which lesson format to pick
Hawama Kiteboarding teaches on the lagoon in three formats, all with certified instructors, following IKO-aligned guidelines. Prices below are per person in euros and include the kite, bar and board, wetsuit, harness, helmet and life jacket, plus the 4x4 transfer from your hotel to the kiting spots and back.
| Lesson time | Private (1 coach, 1 rider) | Semi-private (2 riders) | Group (up to 3 riders) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 hours | €130 | €100 | €60 |
| 4 hours | €250 | €180 | €120 |
| 6 hours | €360 | €260 | €180 |
| 8 hours | €480 | €340 | €240 |
| 10 hours | €580 | €420 | €300 |
Private lessons are the fastest way to progress and the right choice if you travel alone. Semi-private and group lessons are cheaper per person and suit friends, couples and families who learn together; on kitesurfing.me they are booked together with a second person, and each rider gets their own gear. A 12-hour private block costs €680 and a 12-hour group block €340. Each extra hour is €50 private and €30 in a group.
Wing foil lessons are taught at the same school on the same lagoon, from €190 for a private 2 hours and €130 per person for a semi-private 2 hours. See wing foiling in Dakhla. You can book any of these on the Dakhla kite page or on the Hawama Kiteboarding profile: choose your dates, send the request, and the school confirms the plan with you.
A second school on the lagoon: KiteResorts Dakhla
KiteResorts Dakhla is a mobile school: it picks you up at your accommodation and drives you by 4x4 to the lagoon spot that suits the day's wind and tide. Its lessons use radio communication between instructor and student, and it teaches in the same three formats. The prices below are the ones the school publishes, in euros, with all kite equipment and the 4x4 transfer included. Its website does not say whether the semi-private and group prices are per person, so check this with the school when you send your request.
| Lesson time | Private (1 coach, 1 rider) | Semi-private (2 riders) | Group (up to 4 riders) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 hours | €150 | €100 | €70 |
| 4 hours | €280 | €190 | €140 |
| 6 hours | €400 | €270 | €210 |
| 8 hours | €515 | €340 | €280 |
| 10 hours | €610 | €407 | €330 |
| 12 hours | €730 | €487 | €396 |
KiteResorts also teaches wing foil and surf, on the Atlantic side for the waves. See the KiteResorts Dakhla profile, wing foiling in Dakhla and surfing in Dakhla.
When to come
June to August is the windiest stretch (25 to 35 knots, close to daily) but also the hottest and gustiest. April and May and September and October are most often singled out as the best balance of reliable wind and milder conditions, which makes them a good fit for a first course. November to March is lighter for flat-water kiting. More in our guide to the best time to kitesurf in Dakhla.
What to know before you go

- Water is roughly 18 to 24 °C across the year, cooler from November to March; most riders use a 3/2 mm shorty-to-fullsuit in summer and a 4/3 mm in winter mornings.
