You can learn to kitesurf in Watamu from scratch, and it is one of the friendlier places in Kenya to do it. Lessons run at low tide, when sandbars inside the reef give you shallow, flat water to stand in, with warm water all year and a steady cross-onshore wind in the main season. Here is what a lesson looks like and what it costs.

When you learn: the season and the tide

Come in the Kaskazi season, December to March, if you are a complete beginner. The wind is steady and blows towards the beach, and the water is around 30 °C. From June to September the Kusi is stronger and better for people who already ride. Within any day, the tide decides the timing: the school teaches around low tide, when the water is shallow, so your lesson times move a little from day to day with the tide table. That is normal here, not a scheduling problem.

What happens in a lesson

A first course follows the usual IKO steps. What is specific to Watamu is the shallow water and the radio helmet.

  • You start on the beach: setting up the kite, how the wind window works and how to steer safely.
  • In shallow water you fly the kite, get pulled through the water (body drag) and practise getting back to your board.
  • Then the water start: getting up on the board for the first rides.
  • You wear a helmet with a radio, so the instructor can talk to you while you are on the water, and a rescue boat is on hand during lessons.
  • Lessons are taught in English or Italian by IKO-certified instructors.

How long until you ride on your own depends on you and the wind, but for scale: across 206 kite schools on kitesurfing.me the median beginner course is 9 hours. In Watamu you can book 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours at a time and add more as you go.

Which lesson format to pick

FormatRiders per instructor2 h4 h6 h8 h
Group lesson3€67€114€154€207
Semi-private2€80€150€210€290
Private1€130€230€320€400

Prices are per person, equipment included. A group lesson is the cheapest way in and works well with friends at the same level. Semi-private suits couples. Private is the fastest: all the instructor's attention and the session adapted to you. Book any of them directly on the Watamu kite page or on the school profile, choose your dates and pay nothing today.

Lessons or a full kite camp?

If you would rather not organise anything, the seven-day Beginner Kite Camp costs €1,250 per person and includes the airport transfer, villa accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner, kite lessons with video and photo analysis, a safari at Tsavo National Park and a dolphin trip with snorkelling. Flights and visa are not included. If you already have your own place to stay, separate lessons are the more flexible choice.

What to know before you go

  • Fly into Malindi (about 20–25 minutes away, usually via Nairobi) or Mombasa (about two hours by road, often cheaper).
  • You usually do not need a wetsuit: the water is 25–30 °C all year.
  • One stretch of the beach has rocks and is not used for lessons, and in the Kusi season seaweed can build up on the beach.
  • Already riding? You can rent a full kite set from €40 an hour or €70 a day.
