Cumbuco, on Brazil's Ceará coast a short drive from Fortaleza, is best known as a kite town, but it has become a wing foil base too. The reason is the same: steady trade wind and warm water. For a first wing foil course, the lagoon is where it starts.

Lagoon first, open sea later

Ventola Wingfoil School teaches first flights on the Cauípe lagoon, which it describes as flat, fresh water without current. Tonic Mag calls the lagoon the highlight of Cumbuco for wingfoilers. Surf magazin adds a useful caveat: the lagoon is not deep enough for foiling everywhere, so the school chooses where to ride on the day.

Once you fly consistently, the next step is the open sea along Cumbuco beach, where the wind is usually side-onshore at about 14 to 20 knots and there are swell waves outside the break. Ventola runs coaching there on waves, wind, tides and getting out through the shorebreak, which is easier at low tide.

Lessons and prices

Every lesson includes the wing foil equipment, a helmet, a life vest and an instructor who talks you through it by radio. Lessons are taught in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Prices are in euros.

A single hour is a good way to try it; a 6 or 8 hour course is where most people get their first real flights. Book on the Cumbuco wing foil page or on the Ventola Wingfoil School profile: choose your dates and send the request, and the school confirms it.

Getting there

  • Fly into Fortaleza (FOR). Cumbuco is about 30 to 60 minutes away by car, roughly 28 to 35 km.
  • The village is small and walkable; for other lagoons or trips beyond it, a taxi, rental car or beach buggy is easier.
  • The water stays at about 27 to 29 °C all year, so board shorts or a rash guard are enough.
